Steps to Add a Network Printer in CachyOS Prerequisites

Before adding a network printer, ensure the following:

  CUPS is Installed: CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) must be installed on your system.
  CUPS is Running: The CUPS service should be active.

Installation of CUPS

If CUPS is not installed, you can install it using the terminal: bash

sudo pacman -S cups cups-filters cups-pdf

Enable CUPS Service

To enable and start the CUPS service, run: bash

sudo systemctl enable –now cups.service

Add User to Printer Group

Make sure your user account has permission to manage printers by adding it to the lp group: bash

sudo usermod -aG lp $USER

Log out and back in for the changes to take effect. Accessing the CUPS Web Interface

  Open your web browser.
  Navigate to the CUPS web interface by entering the following URL:
  http://localhost:631

Adding the Printer

  In the CUPS web interface, go to the Administration tab.
  Click on Add Printer.
  Select your network printer from the list of discovered printers.
  Follow the prompts to complete the setup, including selecting the appropriate driver if prompted.

Troubleshooting Tips

  If your printer does not appear, ensure it is connected to the same network as your CachyOS system.
  Check if the Avahi service is running for network discovery:

bash

sudo systemctl status avahi-daemon.service

  If you encounter issues, consider checking firewall settings that may block printer detection.
